| Straw: MP pay rises should be limited | <<back next>> |
 |
Jack Straw has said that any increase in the salary of MPs should be kept in line with those of other public sector workers.
The leader of the Commons was giving the government's response to the Senior Salaries Review Body's three-yearly review of parliamentary pay.
It follows news reports that some MPs had called for rises of as much as 66 per cent to their £60,277 annual salary to bring them in line with professionals such as GPs.
But Straw told the independent body that rises for MPs and ministers should take into account the government's two per cent target for inflation.
