In the light of two European Commissioners being elected to posts in their own country, two new Commissioners have been appointed.
The Commissioner for Regional Policy, Danuta Hübner from Poland (pictured), was elected as an MEP at the top of the list of the Civic Platform party in the Warsaw constituency in early June, and will take up her position in mid-July. She will be replaced by Commissioner-designate Paweł Samecki, an economist by training who joins the European Commission from the board of the National Bank of Poland.
The Commissioner for Financial Programming and Budget, Lithuanian Dalia Grybauskaitė, was elected President of Lithuania in mid-May, the first woman to be elected head of state in that country. She will be replaced by Commissioner-designate Algirdas Gediminas Šemeta, who was previously Minister for Finance in Lithuania, in early July.
The two new Commissioners will serve only until the next Commission is appointed, which is due to take place by 1 November. Current MEP and chair of the Budgets Committee Janusz Lewandowski is favourite to fill the role of Poland's Commissioner for the 2009-14 term.
