 | The President of Cyprus, Tassos Papadopolous, and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat held a meeting hosted by the United Nations, where they agreed to establish committees to address practical issues of interest to both communities, such as water management and environmental matters.
Until their meeting earlier this month, the leaders of the two halves of Cyprus had not met since the Greek Cypriot rejection of a UN peace plan in 2004. Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded the north following a coup led by Greek nationalists seeking union with Greece.
