     Lithuanian parliament approves new prime minister  <<back  next>>

The Lithuanian Seimas (parliament) has approved Gediminas Kirkilas as the new prime minister by 85 votes to 13, with five abstentions. The vote follows the rejection by parliament last week of Zigmantas Balcytis as prime minister.

Mr Kirkilas, a member of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party, now has 15 days to form a cabinet.
