| EU agrees to start Turkey talks | <<back next>> |
 |
A Council of the European Union meeting held today to attempt to tackle the failure of the Council to reach a common EU position on commencing the first chapter of membership talks with Turkey was successful.
The problem had arisen because Cyprus had refused to endorse the common position because Turkey had failed to recognise it as the legitimate government and had not kept its promise to open its ports to Cypriot vessels and the compromise document reminds the Turkish government that failure to implement its obligations would affect progress in the negotiations.
The Turkish foreign minister has indicated that he would not attend the meeting unless negotiations began as scheduled.
