| EU-Turkey accession talks in danger | <<back next>> |
 |
A Council of the European Union meeting is to be held today to attempt to tackle a problem in regard to opening the first chapter of membership talks with Turkey.
The problem has arisen because Cyprus has refused to agree a common EU position and the Turkish foreign minister has indicated that he would not attend the meeting unless negotiations began.
The government of Cyprus has refused to agree to the common position because Turkey has failed to recognised it as the legitimate government and has not kept its promise to open its ports to Cypriot vessels.
