Special representative for climate change appointed  <<back  next>>

John Ashton has been appointed as a Special Representative for Climate Change at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO).

In 2002 he co-founded and became chief executive of E3G, an independent not-for-profit agency brokering deals on climate and energy between developed and developing countries.

He will be seconded to the role from E3G to the FCO from the week of June 19.

Prior to 2002 he headed the FCO's environment policy department for 4 years. He joined the FCO in 1978.

Tony Juniper, director of Friends of the Earth UK, told the BBC: "We welcome John Ashton in this role - he is a proven advocate with a track record in helping to move the global community forward on climate change, notably in terms of persuading Russia to ratify the Kyoto Protocol."
