 | Serbia officially declared its independence from the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro during a special parliamentary session on 5 June in response to the decision of the Montenegrin parliament to secede on 3 June, and instructed state institutions to complete the division within 45 days.
Serbia also declared itself the legal heir to the union, the last vestige of the old Yugoslav state, which means that it will inherit the memberships of all the international organisations to which the federation belonged, meaning that Montenegro must apply for membership.
The president of the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro, Svetozar Marovic, stood down on 4 June, following the dissolution of the Union government and parliament.
