     Montenegro declares independence  <<back  next>>

Montenegro formally declared independence on 3 June during a late night special sitting of parliament. The declaration follows the referendum held on 21 May, when 55.5 per cent voted for independence, only slightly above the necessary 55 per cent required.

Serbia will declare its independence from the union shortly, after which negotiations between the Montenegrin and Serbian governments on dividing the assets of the federation will begin.
