 | Montenegro will hold a referendum on Sunday 21 May on whether to dissolve its ties with Serbia and become an independent state.
Rallies by pro- and anti-independence factions are being held in the capital, Podgorica in advance of the vote, in which there must be a clear majority of 55 per cent of the vote in favour of breaking up the federation for independence to be declared.
Montenegrin Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic has led the campaign to dissolve the links with Serbia, but there are close ethnic and religious ties between the two republics which at present form the Union of Serbia and Montenegro, the last vestige of the former Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.
